Points of View
While working on our character collages this weekend I noticed how different my opinion of my character (David WalksAlong) was from my partners. While reading the book I thought of him as a selfish person who only looked out for number one: himself. How else could you explain the way he threatened Thomas or not even bothering to visit his nephew in prison? In my mind, he was a selfish, greedy man who liked the idea of power but was too lazy to do anything with it. As my partners and I were discussing our conclusions I was amazed to see how differently they viewed WalksAlong. Both of them thought he was a lovving man who would do anything to help his uncle. I was flabbergasted! How could they think that?! Didn't they read the exact same text as I? What could they see that I didn't? It was only after talking with them that I realized how diferently each person can absorb the words and paint a picture in their mind. It was a total wake up call for me and I realized that there are many diferent sides to everything. I wish that one day we could pick one character (He or she doesn't have to be a main character like Thomas or Victor) and see how everyone pictures that person in their mind. I think it would be extremely intresting to do.

Hey Sami!
Whats up bud? Hey i think that's a really cool blog to post about how we interpret things very differently from others in everyday life without even helping it. I think that's really an interesting point to bring up. When i think about what you are saying it's weird to think about all the other interpretations people make and how often I probably think that only my point of view or "interrpretation" makes sense. Where someone might have a TOTALLY different take on something based off of a simple life expierence. For example if I interrpreted that a slide would be a fun thing to do in a park for kids would seem like a very general interpretaion that alot of other people would say. But someone could intepret a slide in a very negative way just based on an expierence that could have happened to them when they were a kid. For example when I think of slides I think of Mrs. Christ, my first grade teacher, yelling at me. When I was in first grade I rember at recess one day after it had rained really hard that night i wanted to go down the slide; and you know how at the bottom of slides there sometimes a little ditch or whole from where your feet would land, well the whole at the bottom of the schools slide had filled with water but wood chips float so i saw wood chips and then the water was dirty so it really didn't look like a whole filled with water in a first graders eyes so i went down it and up to my mid thigh on my jeans was soaked and dirty and i remeber her yelling at me. The funny thing is, is that i don't remeber what she said or what ended up happening but i just remeber that seen in my head. So I think that's a really interesting point that I never really had noticed before how many different interpretation there can be of something simple like a chair as one gets older and smarter and inevidably get more mature.
hey Sami! Yeah I completely agree, you and I were in the same group and it was interesting that we all had different opinions. I guess it is just easy to misinterpret things and it so fascinating that when each person reads something, they see it in a totally different way. That is not to say that one person is right, though, because in these types of situations there is no right answer. It is so weird that so many different thoughts can come out from reading about one character! Very interesting!
